The Nordic countries share of the global forest area is only 1,6%, but in terms of supplier for the global market, it has a far more important role.
The Nordic paper/paperboard export is 18% of the global total, and the sawnwood export is 15%. Finland and Sweden are the giants on the global forest market, but Norway and Denmark also contribute with export and production of various forest products. The export of paper and paperboards (in 2017) is led by Germany, followed by USA, but thereafter we find Sweden and Finland in a narrow battle for the third place.
The data in the figure is based on compilations from FAO (Forest Products 2017 and Global Forest Resource Assessment FRA 2015).
More statistics to come
The SNS board has decided to compile and present statistics for the forests and forests industries in the Nordic countries. Discussions are ongoing about which data to present and which data sources are most suitable to use.
Questions about the project can be sent to SNS secretariat, sns@slu.se or to Mats Hannerz, mats.hannerz@silvinformation.se.
