Valorization of birch – from the forest and beyond (Value: Birch)
Coordinator: Katrin Zimmer, NIBIO, katrin.zimmer(a)nibio.no
ValueBirch, the annual SNS network on Birch valorization from the forest and beyond, aims to enhance the value creation of birch in the Nordic region by connecting researchers, forest owners, and industries focused on its sustainable use. Despite its potential, birch has been underutilized compared to dominant coniferous species like Norway spruce and Scots pine. This network will address the knowledge gaps, logistics, and market development that hinder birch’s utilization in various applications, particularly in the construction industry.
The project acknowledges birch’s characteristics, including rapid growth, high genetic variability, and potential to improve biodiversity and forest resilience. Despite birch’s ranking as the third largest species in terms of stem volume in the Nordic countries, and considerable standing volumes in central Europe, it remains largely neglected in many countries, often relegated to firewood status. By taking into account the entire value chain, from forest management and mobilization to processing and distribution, in the discussion, we aim to highlight the importance of establishing grading systems and communication solutions that optimize the logistical flow of birch timber. It is the long-term goal to improve utilization in products such as plywood, furniture, and construction materials, ultimately contributing to enhanced income from forestry activities.
In 2025, we plan to facilitate knowledge exchange through two online meetings and a physical gathering, fostering collaboration and the sharing of ideas among network participants. Our long-term vision is to unlock birch’s full potential, promote its benefits beyond firewood, and contribute to sustainable development in the Nordic region.
