Workshop on forest multifunctionality in European forests

“Forest MultifunctionalityA concept for highlighting conflicting and compatible goals of forests in Europe” – that is the titel of a workshop organised by Nordic-Baltic forest research organisations’ network PROFOR.

September 26th at 9:00-12:00 CET participants will meet at Helsinki EU Office in Brussels, or join online to discuss how healthy, productive and multifunctional forests are needed to meet the societal challenges of our time. There is a “trilemma” built in when continuously using forests in a more intensive way.
How can conflicting sustainability goals be balanced and achieved? How can enhanced carbon storage
and sequestration, increased use of wood-based products to substitute fossil based raw materials, and
biodiversity protection, together with capacity to deliver ecosystem services, simultaneously be met?

The Nordic-Baltic forest research organisations’ network PROFOR will organise a workshop to
discuss synergies and to highlight trade-offs between conflicting and compatible goals and forest
utilisation, in a science-based context. The presentations of the event will focus on a more holistic
approach on these questions. There is more than one truth.
