Latvia conference gave room for young researchers

Nordic Growth and Yield Researchers Networks conference has been successfully held in Latvia, 7-9 June 2022.
Text: Zane Lībiete, Nordic Growth and Yield Researchers Network

In three days of scientific sessions and field visits, we covered topics related to growth modelling, tree propagation and forest regeneration, tree breeding, climate change-related challenges, effect of forest management operations as well as biotic and abiotic risks affecting forest growth, tree vitality and timber quality.

The presentations and discussions conveyed several important messages. The body of knowledge has notably increased over the years, thus providing new data and possibilities for modelling. Long-term trials, large-scale measurements and modern equipment present unique opportunities for data gathering and analysis. At the same time, there are still many unanswered questions and uncertainties, for example, related to the specifics of mixed stand development, the effect of climate extremes and the overall accuracy of the models.

More than 30 in-person and online participants attended the event, and we were very pleased to see many young researchers and PhD students presenting their results. The network certainly has a future!

The conference of Nordic Growth and Yield researchers’ Network is financed by SNS.
