Nordic Forest Research (SNS) and the Forest Bioeconomy Network (ForBioeconomy) are jointly announcing a call for research networks to support activities in 2026. This initiative aims to foster cooperation and enhance synergy within forest research across the Nordic region. We want to strengthen forest research across the Nordic region, bridge gaps between research and practical applications and promote cross-sector collaboration within a sustainable bioeconomy.
Focus areas of the call
1 Preparedness, robustness, and resilience to crises, damages, and extreme weather
Recent crises and extreme weather events have highlighted the critical need for cross-border collaboration in the Nordic region to prevent and manage such challenges. This need was underscored in the Karlstad Declaration of 2024, which calls for stronger cooperation on preparedness and resilience in food supply and forestry.
SNS and ForBioeconomy invite research networks focused on strengthening the preparedness, robustness, and resilience of the Nordic forest sector to better manage unpredictable future events.
2 SNS strategy focus areas
We also welcome proposals that align with the SNS strategy’s key areas, including:
• Forest resources as a foundation for value creation and rural development
• Climate change adaptation and mitigation
• Protection of forest biodiversity
Successful applicants may receive funding of up to 200,000 SEK for network activities in 2026, covering up to 50% of the total project budget.
To be eligible for funding
Networks should include at least five countries and at least three research institutions from different countries within the Nordic region. Networks can also involve relevant external partners, but the main applicant must be a researcher or communication officer at a Nordic research institution.
At least 40% gender representation is required among both applicants and participants. SNS welcomes applicants and participants of other genders than the binary. PhD students and early career researchers (within ten years of starting their research career) should be included.
Find prerequisites in the call text below!
Expected outcomes of the networking
The outputs of funded networks should have tangible benefits for the Nordic community. This may include:
• Knowledge exchange through workshops, seminars, conferences (in-person, digital, or hybrid)
• Peer-reviewed scientific papers
• Policy recommendations based on research
• Large-scale research funding proposals
• Databases or websites
