CAR-ES and the SNS-120 project organized a seminar and workshop in Helsinki, 31 October – 2 November, 2018. The main aims were to examine the main results of the SNS-120 project as well as novel research on the topic, discuss utilization of wood ash in forests and how it is regulated in different countries, and update the status of the work done in CAR-ES activities.

CAR-ES co-organized the conference “Governing sustainability of bioenergy, biomaterial and bioproduct supply chains from forest and agricultural landscapes” at the University of Copenhagen, 17-19 April 2018. More information at the conference web page.

A joint CAR-ES and NB Nord meeting was held at Skogforsk, Uppsala, in February 21 – 22, 2018. The purpose of the meeting was to initiate new Nordic/Baltic research and to facilitate already existing collaborations between the two CARs that share an interest in sustainable forest management.

CAR-ES III workshop and network meeting “Understanding Forest Management for Enhanced Environmental Services: Soil carbon dynamics and functional biodiversity” was held at the University of Tartu, June 30th 2017, back-to-back with the Woody Root 7 Symposium (http://woodyroot7.ut.ee/ ).

The meeting aimed at getting an overview of previous and ongoing studies on soil functional biodiversity and relationships with soil carbon accumulation and loss in forests of the Nordic-Baltic region,  in general as well as in relation to various forest management practices. CAR-ES 2016-2020 kick-off meeting was held in Riga, Latvia, 18-19 May 2016. The main aim of the meeting was to develop a practical work plan for the first two years of the new funding period.

The meeting was back-to-back with the kick-off meeting of SNS-120: Anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas emissions from organic forest soils: improved inventories and implications for sustainable management, 19-20 May.

CAR-ES co-organized the workshop “Landscape management and design for food, bioenergy and the bioeconomy: methodology and governance aspects” 15 – 16 March 2016, Chalmers, Gothenburg, Sweden. The workshop aimed to (i) facilitate the sharing of views and experiences and (ii) provide the basis for a publication about methodologies and tools for assessing land-use impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems services, including an agenda for further advancement of science and knowledge in support of governance agreements. CAR-ES 2011-2015 final conference:

Managing Forests to Promote Environmental Services: Climate change adaptation and mitigation, water protection, biodiversity conservation, and soil quality maintenance.

Carbon sequestration, water protection and biodiversity are key environmental services provided by the Nordic and Baltic forests, and each of them are linked to soil properties and quality. Various types of forest management have different effects on these services, and knowledge on how the forest management can help maintain and enhance them is crucial to sound decision making in the forest sector and in policy development.

The conference was arranged to properly round-off the activities of the SNS funded CAR-ES network for the 2011-2015 period. All researchers working with these topics were invited to present their work, present state-of-the-art, and jointly identify knowledge gaps to be addressed in the future.

The conference was successfully held in Copenhagen, 3-5 November 2015, with about 50 participants from especially the Nordic and Baltic countries, but with also Germany, Great Britain and United States being represented. Several PhD-students participate and presented their work.

Which are most important future challenges for the forest sector in the Nordic-Baltic region? Joint Workshop of SNS and Centres of Advanced Research (CARs), 18 May 2015, Skogforsk, Uppsala Science Park, Dag Hammarsjöldsväg 36A, Uppsala, Sweden. CAR-ES workshop and network meetings, 20-22 October 2014, Vantaa, Finland. New work was presented on ecosystem services from forests. The meeting included about 25 participants from the Nordic and Baltic countries. An excursion was arranged to see and discuss, among other, management of ripean zones in forest. The programme is available from the workshop homepage, from which also the proceedings are available.

CAR-ES workshop and network meetings, 20-21 March 2014 in Birštonas, Lithuania. The workshop included a seminar with presentations on various aspects of ecosystem services from forests (see program, Annex B1) and an excursion to see, among other, conservation sites, and forests left untouched for a period of 40 years. A number of 25 people from the Nordic and Baltic countries participated. A business meeting was also held, along with other project meetings of the CAR-ES spinoff projects.
