{"id":246,"date":"2016-11-07T11:26:40","date_gmt":"2016-11-07T11:26:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/?page_id=246"},"modified":"2022-03-22T08:13:08","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T08:13:08","slug":"events","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/events\/","title":{"rendered":"Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<hr>\n<p>The final meeting of CAR-ES and a mini-conference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skogur.is\/is\/rannsoknir\/throunarverkefni\/radstefnur-og-fundir\/sustainable-forest-management-research-in-the-nordicbaltic-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Forest Management Research in the Nordic\/Baltic Region<\/a> were held in Hallormssta\u00f0ur, Iceland during October 5-7, 2021. We had altogether 87 participants in this hybrid meeting, of whom 68 participated virtually in one or (mostly) more days. Due to some technical issues, recorded presentations are not available as initially planned. However, presentation slides are available along with the program on the conference web site (link above). Those present on-site enjoyed several informative excursions to Icelandic forests &#8211; and left under the impression that Iceland is a well-forested country with constantly pleasant weather!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-438 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Osallistujat-IS-Edda-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Osallistujat-IS-Edda-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Osallistujat-IS-Edda-1024x499.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Osallistujat-IS-Edda-768x374.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Osallistujat-IS-Edda-1536x748.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Osallistujat-IS-Edda-2048x997.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/car-es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Osallistujat-IS-Edda-150x73.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>CAR-ES held its annual workshop at NIBIO, \u00c5s, Norway, during November 18-19, 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"nova-e-text nova-e-text--size-m nova-e-text--family-sans-serif nova-e-text--spacing-none nova-e-text--color-inherit\">\n<div class=\"nova-e-text nova-e-text--size-m nova-e-text--family-sans-serif nova-e-text--spacing-s nova-e-text--color-inherit redraft-text\">We tested a \u201chybrid meeting\u201d where most of the participants travelled to the actual venue, and some participated distantly. More information at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ign.ku.dk\/bioenergy-conf-2018\/\">conference web page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/nordicforestresearch.org\/blog\/2018\/02\/28\/cooperation-for-sustainable-forestry\/\">joint CAR-ES and NB Nord meeting<\/a> was held at Skogforsk, Uppsala,&nbsp;in February 21 &#8211; 22, 2018. The purpose of the meeting was to initiate new Nordic\/Baltic research and to facilitate already existing collaborations between the two CARs that share an interest in sustainable forest management.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">CAR-ES III workshop and network meeting &#8220;<strong>Understanding Forest Management for Enhanced Environmental Services: Soil carbon dynamics and functional biodiversity<\/strong>&#8221;&nbsp;was held&nbsp;at the University of&nbsp;Tartu, June 30th 2017, back-to-back with the Woody Root 7 Symposium (<a href=\"http:\/\/woodyroot7.ut.ee\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">http:\/\/woodyroot7.ut.ee\/<\/span><\/a> ).<\/p>\n<p>The meeting aimed at getting an overview of previous and ongoing studies on soil functional biodiversity and relationships with soil carbon accumulation and loss in forests of the Nordic-Baltic region,&nbsp;&nbsp;in general as well as in relation to various forest management practices. The workshop aimed to (i) facilitate the sharing of views and experiences and (ii) provide the basis for a publication about methodologies and tools for assessing land-use impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems services, including an agenda for further advancement of science and knowledge in support of governance agreements. Contact persons: G\u00f6ran Berndes (<a href=\"mailto:goran.berndes@chalmers.se\">goran.berndes@chalmers.se<\/a>) and Madelene Ostwald (<a href=\"mailto:madelene.ostwald@chalmers.se\">madelene.ostwald@chalmers.se<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>CAR-ES 2011-2015 final conference:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Managing Forests to Promote Environmental Services: <\/strong>Climate change adaptation and mitigation, water protection, biodiversity conservation, and soil quality maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Carbon sequestration, water protection and biodiversity are key environmental services provided by the Nordic and Baltic forests, and each of them are linked to soil properties and quality. Various types of forest management have different effects on these services, and knowledge on how the forest management can help maintain and enhance them is crucial to sound decision making in the forest sector and in policy development.<\/p>\n<p>The conference was arranged to properly round-off the activities of the SNS funded CAR-ES network for the 2011-2015 period. All researchers working with these topics were&nbsp;invited to present their work,&nbsp;present state-of-the-art, and jointly identify knowledge gaps to be addressed in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;conference&nbsp;was&nbsp;successfully held in&nbsp;Copenhagen,&nbsp;3-5&nbsp;November 2015, with&nbsp;about 50 participants from especially the Nordic and Baltic countries, but with also&nbsp;Germany, Great Britain and United States being represented.
