The final meeting of CAR-ES and a mini-conference Sustainable Forest Management Research in the Nordic\/Baltic Region<\/a> were held in Hallormssta\u00f0ur, Iceland during October 5-7, 2021. We had altogether 87 participants in this hybrid meeting, of whom 68 participated virtually in one or (mostly) more days. Due to some technical issues, recorded presentations are not available as initially planned. However, presentation slides are available along with the program on the conference web site (link above). Those present on-site enjoyed several informative excursions to Icelandic forests – and left under the impression that Iceland is a well-forested country with constantly pleasant weather!<\/p>\n

CAR-ES held its annual workshop at NIBIO, \u00c5s, Norway, during November 18-19, 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We tested a \u201chybrid meeting\u201d where most of the participants travelled to the actual venue, and some participated distantly. Several updates were given on the research carried out within the CAR-ES. Further, plans for the year 2020 – the last one for the current CARs – and beyond were made. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

CAR-ES and the SNS-120 project organized a seminar and workshop in Helsinki, 31 October – 2 November, 2018. The main aims were to examine the main results of the SNS-120 project as well as novel research on the topic, discuss utilization of wood ash in forests and how it is regulated in different countries, and update the status of the work done in CAR-ES activities.<\/p>\n

A joint CAR-ES and NB Nord meeting<\/a> was held at Skogforsk, Uppsala, in February 21 – 22, 2018. The purpose of the meeting was to initiate new Nordic\/Baltic research and to facilitate already existing collaborations between the two CARs that share an interest in sustainable forest management.<\/p>\n

CAR-ES III workshop and network meeting “Understanding Forest Management for Enhanced Environmental Services: Soil carbon dynamics and functional biodiversity<\/strong>” was held at the University of Tartu, June 30th 2017, back-to-back with the Woody Root 7 Symposium (http:\/\/woodyroot7.ut.ee\/<\/span><\/a> ).<\/p>\n

The meeting aimed at getting an overview of previous and ongoing studies on soil functional biodiversity and relationships with soil carbon accumulation and loss in forests of the Nordic-Baltic region,  in general as well as in relation to various forest management practices. CAR-ES 2016-2020 kick-off meeting was held in Riga, Latvia, 18-19 May 2016. The main aim of the meeting was to develop a practical work plan for the first two years of the new funding period.<\/p>\n

CAR-ES co-organized the workshop \u201cLandscape management and design for food, bioenergy and the bioeconomy: methodology and governance aspects<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u201d 15 \u2013 16 March 2016, Chalmers, Gothenburg, Sweden. The workshop aimed to (i) facilitate the sharing of views and experiences and (ii) provide the basis for a publication about methodologies and tools for assessing land-use impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems services, including an agenda for further advancement of science and knowledge in support of governance agreements. CAR-ES 2011-2015 final conference:<\/p>\n

Managing Forests to Promote Environmental Services: <\/strong>Climate change adaptation and mitigation, water protection, biodiversity conservation, and soil quality maintenance.<\/p>\n

Carbon sequestration, water protection and biodiversity are key environmental services provided by the Nordic and Baltic forests, and each of them are linked to soil properties and quality. Various types of forest management have different effects on these services, and knowledge on how the forest management can help maintain and enhance them is crucial to sound decision making in the forest sector and in policy development.<\/p>\n

The conference was arranged to properly round-off the activities of the SNS funded CAR-ES network for the 2011-2015 period. All researchers working with these topics were invited to present their work, present state-of-the-art, and jointly identify knowledge gaps to be addressed in the future.<\/p>\n

The conference was successfully held in Copenhagen, 3-5 November 2015, with about 50 participants from especially the Nordic and Baltic countries, but with also Germany, Great Britain and United States being represented. Several PhD-students participate and presented their work.<\/p>\n

CAR-ES workshop and network meetings, 20-22 October 2014, Vantaa, Finland. New work was presented on ecosystem services from forests. The meeting included about 25 participants from the Nordic and Baltic countries. An excursion was arranged to see and discuss, among other, management of ripean zones in forest. CAR-ES workshop and network meetings, 20-21 March 2014 in Bir\u0161tonas, Lithuania. The workshop included a seminar with presentations on various aspects of ecosystem services from forests (see program, Annex B1) and an excursion to see, among other, conservation sites, and forests left untouched for a period of 40 years. A number of 25 people from the Nordic and Baltic countries participated. A business meeting was also held, along with other project meetings of the CAR-ES spinoff projects.<\/p>\n
