Decreasing bark beetle damage naturally

The bark beetle will maybe be beaten by its own odor receptors.

The bark beetle causes major economic damage every year in the Nordic forests. Swedish researchers at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences now tries to fool them with a fragrance that is supposed to disturb the insects odor communication. They want to find a fragrance that would block the beetles capacity to recognize other beetles and certain environments. That would make it hard for them to coordinate a massattack on trees.

The trick is to find a natural fragrance that has the right impact on the beetle but doesn’t affect other insects. It is also crucial that the method doesn’t affect the biodiversity.
